acoustic diffusers

Beginning in 2016 and finishing construction just recently in 2020, Locus Architecture took on the renovation of this 100-year-old Lutheran church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Trusses that had been covered up in the 70’s were revealed and refinished, arguably the most dramatic aspect of this overhaul of the entire sanctuary. Given that the ceiling that had covered the trusses for 50-some years was now gone, the acoustics in the space were drastically different. The congregation wanted diffusers that, first off, worked, but also would represent something spiritual and significant to their faith. I was tasked to create a concept that based the form of the four total diffusers on a particular hymn. By extrapolating the music notes and their visual appearance on the staff, the result is a series of vertical fins of varying lengths and heights. By painting the diffusers the same color as the walls, they embody a visual softness that dovetails with their dynamism.
