In this project, the task was to design a Serpentine Pavilion using Herzog & de Meuron’s 2012 pavilion as a departure point (see ‘serpentine study’). By drastically changing the formal presence and materiality, an entirely new atmospheric quality is created. The 2012 pavilion is defined by its dark, subdued atmosphere; in this pavilion I set out to create a bright, open, and earthy feeling. The pavilion’s construction is essentially sculptural landscaping - by utilizing pre existing and natural materials, it operates both as an extension of the site and a powerful independent space.
